I agree that it probably isn’t as fragile as we are led to believe. Our spending does help although I wonder how much it would help the economy if all the companies with billions of dollars in their war chests would start spending again.

Of course governments want to scare us into thinking we all need to keep up our spending. They’re not going to make as much on taxes if spending slows down. Despite the way it seems that the economy is propped up by our spending, it is not as fragile as it seems. I’d rather worry about my financial decisions rather than worry about the very minor effects my decisions have on the overall economy.

That is one of the best ways to make certain you save IMO.

I don’t have any brilliant tips, but what has worked for me is to make it so that I only have to make ONE disciplined discipline when it comes to spending. That means I contribute a sizeable amount of my income to 401K (around 25%) and then I know that if nothing else that money is safely out of my hands.
